Student Employee Recognition

The National Student Employment Association has declared that the second week in April each year be set aside to recognize the value of student employees and student employment professionals. The purpose of this week is threefold:

  1. To enhance awareness of student employment and its important role in the higher education experience.
  2. To recognize the outstanding contributions and achievements of students who work while attending college.
  3. To thank the employers who hire students for part-time positions and make the student employment program such a success.

The EKU Student Employment Appreciation Day recognizes and honors the efforts of student employees for their contributions to the university and its community. Faculty and Staff members may nominate one or more EKU student employee(s) within their respective area by following the instructions below.

Award Categories

EKU Student Employee of the Year

Open to any student employee or Graduate Assitant that has made outstanding contributions or achievements for a department.

Examples of performance that surpasses expectations:

  • Student consistently performs extra duties that substantially goes beyond their assigned work.
  • Student works to create a positive, collaborative, and efficient work environment.
  • Student is trusted to work on special project or serve on teams designed to improve the department.
  • Student makes special effort to learn new skills and/or take on additional responsibility.
  • Student displays a high level of professionalism and represents EKU with pride.

Rockstar Rookie

Student must be a first-time employee in a department.

Examples of performance that surpasses expectations:

  • Student has shown outstanding performance in their position.
  • Student needs little to no encouragement to learn new skills or ask for assistance when needed.
  • Student shows a desire to grow in their position.

Excellence in Leadership

Supervision of other students must be part of the job description.

Examples of performance that surpasses expectations:

  • Student has taken initiative to be a leader among their peers.
  • Promotes a work environment that is respectful, supportive, and collaborative
  • Student is an excellent role model to peers and makes an effort to mentor others.

Big Idea

Student has implemented an innovative idea that have helped improve the department.

Examples of performance that surpasses expectations:

  • Student is willing to bring new ideas to the department and identifies gaps in your area that could benefit from change.
  • Student often thinks outside of the box to improve current processes or create a new one.
  • Student promotes the exchange of diverse ideas and perspectives.

How Can I Recognize My Student Employees?

April 11th – 15th, 2022 is National Student Employee Appreciation Week. Here are some ideas on how to show your student employees how much they are appreciated.

Student Awards Eligibility 

  • Currently enrolled in an EKU undergraduate or graduate degree program
  • Employed within the current fiscal year, July 1st – June 30th
